My kids and I got the opportunity to review a copy of “The Battle Begins: The Story of Creation” from the Action Bible series from the Family Christian bloggers. If your kids have graduated beyond the age of The Jesus Storybook Bible, I definitely think this series is worth checking out.
My two have been into graphic novels for quite a while, so I was excited to find this a while back. While it doesn’t replace an actual Bible, I think it’s a fantastic supplement. There’s an actual Action Bible that covers the 215 narratives from the Bible in graphic format, but the series goes more in depth into the pivotal stories of faith, covering creation, Easter, Christmas, and the life of Jesus in the New Testament.
I loved that this book on creation went beyond the pristine Sunday School version of creation. Through vivid imagery it gives a glimpse of spiritual warfare while looking at the fall of Lucifer from Heaven, which is something that my son had never really grasped. It always amazes me to reread the stories of people from the Bible and consider how different my grownup perspective is from my little girl perspectives.
One other thing that I really appreciated was that the end of this telling of the creation story tied into the birth of Christ. I love to show my children those threads that tie one person or thought or principle to others throughout the Bible.
If you’re looking for a fresh way to make the Bible come alive for your tween, I highly recommend checking out any of The Action Bible products.
Oh. And my 11 year old son gave his stamp of approval. He thought the graphics were “cool’ and he liked that there “was some funny stuff like baboon butts” thrown in to the story. Just keepin’ it real, people. He’s a boy and boys are generally gross. I took that moment to remind him that even God has a sense of humor. He also said that this book was for older kids, not little kindergartners. I’d agree with him on that.
