1. Read this book! And this one!
I just finished reading Lizzy & Jane by Katherine Reay. I loved it so much. If you love Jane Austin anything, or you enjoy cooking or eating and you need a good book to read by the pool, then this is the one. Truly. It was one of those books that I just gobbled up and then was sad when it was over. Very, very sad.
Also, my kids and I just got back from a road trip to IL. That’s 12 long hours in the car, y’all. TWELVE. All day long. One of the things we like to do to pass the time is listen to audiobooks. This trip one of the books we listened to was Melanie Shankle’s newest book, Nobody’s Cuter Than You. And really…my kids are 14 and 11 and they both were captivated by her storytelling skills and masterful use of snark and sarcasm and wit. That’s got to be worth something. And I hope they got a picture of what a beautiful and integral part of life friends are.
The granddaughter of L.M. Montgomery is working with producers to create a new Anne of Green Gables movie. And Martin Sheen is going to be Matthew Cuthbert. Ack! I love the old AOGG movies. I wouldn’t be a child of the ’80’s if I didn’t. Gilbert was my first celebrity crush. It wouldn’t break my heart to see new movies come out that are produced with all the modern technology available to us now in film editing, but for the love! There are so many other old men that could have done this role. Just.WHY???!
3. Favorite Thing
Strawberries. I’m in love with them right now. I’m deeply disappointed that I missed the peak here in Georgia, so I’m having to get them at the local grocery store. I feel like they deserve a Seussical ode. Only I’m not a poet. So maybe a haiku.
A poet I am not.
4. Saying Goodbye
A very sad thing happened in our family a couple of weeks ago. I’ve noticed on Facebook that it seems to happen pretty frequently among my peers these days. We’ve reached that age, I guess. We said goodbye to our sweet, old, nearly toothless, white-whiskered, diabetic cat. She was my girl, my sweet Bailey. She lived to be 16 1/2, even with diabetes.
Every time I made sound come out of my computer she had to come investigate. Every time my boy squealed in the middle of a tickle fight she would come insert herself between him and his daddy to “protect” him. Every time I opened the sandwich meat drawer in the fridge she came running to beg for a meat treat. Every time I sat down, she was in my lap within a matter of seconds. Never has a cat loved her human with a deeper devotion. I was her person.
My sweet (much younger) cats, Sadie and Libby, spent a few days looking for her and then duking it out for dominance once they realized the queen bee was gone. They seem to have mostly made peace and can even, once in awhile, be spotted playing together. They also come sit in my lap for a few minutes most every evening. But it’s just not quite the same.
5. My Raised Bed, Square Foot Garden
Now y’all. We all know that coffee has magical powers for people. But it also has magical powers for plants. My sweet momma saved up TWO WHOLE GALLONS of coffee grounds for me. Because, while I love coffee, I’m kind of spotty about my consumption of it, and they are pretty consistent coffee drinkers, so they produce a lot more used grounds. When I got home from IL, I dumped almost a whole gallon of grounds onto the plants in my garden and they are such happy little plant babies right now.
Last year my garden was just pitiful. Pi.ti.ful. I got some sugar snap peas and a few peppers and cherry tomatoes out of it. The end. All that work and money and not a whole lot to show for it. It turns out that our soil was nitrogen deficient and adding extra coffee grounds to it solved that problem.
Can I just tell you that there is all kinds of wonderful stuff growing out there now? Zucchinis and squash, tomatoes, peas, cucumbers and a plethora of itty bitty peppers just showed up. And even some green onions and a head of lettuce. I’ve had bad luck with greens. This year I just got them into the ground too late. But I’m planning to try again in the fall. And we’ve even got plans to add another raised bed on the side of the house that will give us about 50% more growing space.
And a Freebie…or two
Earlier this week I wrote about the difference between noticers (AND BELIEVE ME-women are noticers!) and comparison. And also about going viral. Which I haven’t. But if you missed it click here. And it caused me to remember one of my favorite quotes. So I made a Facebook cover photo and you can go take it, tag it, copy it or paste it by clicking here. It looks like this…only bigger:
