I’ve established the fact that I’m a font hoarder. It’s no secret. I won’t try to deny it. I see a new font on a meme in my social media feed and then I have to go find it on Creative Market or Font Squirrel.
When I first started doing my own design work, I downloaded ALL THE FREE FONTS. All of them. Then I learned about the difference between commercial and personal use fonts and found out about “intellectual property” and deleted a whole bunch of fonts from my font library so I wouldn’t accidentally use a personal use font in something for a client. I love design work and didn’t want to put myself in a position to be in trouble with copyright infringement from the get-go. I only use fonts that I have purchased and have the commercial right to use in my projects.
But the free commercial use fonts are pretty boring. Blah. Bland. They’re definitely nothing to write home about. No bazingas, for sure.
Since the average font runs anywhere from $8 to over $100, fonts can get expensive really quickly. But I’ve found a secret that has let me build up a phenomenal font library on a fairly small budget.
There are many places to find these fantastical bundles, but my favorites are Design Cuts and My Design Deals, and once in awhile Creative Market has a bundle that I love. I have to exercise great restraint when I come across these deals, otherwise I would sink all of my profits back into more fonts and graphic elements and textures. My hard drive is begging me to stop!
My favorite bundle so far was the one I picked up before Christmas from MyDesignDeals.com. It included all of these fonts!
I know! All of this fun font goodness was packed into that great bundle. I still haven’t used all of those gorgeous fonts. So many fonts, so little time!
But guess what! They’re running a new deal that I’m dying to drop some cash on after I check my budget! Just a few of them made it into the picture. You can check it out here: (And yeah…affiliate link. But I’m not promoting anything I won’t buy myself!)
I need the Midnight Font in my life, y’all.
Now … here’s the great thing about these design sites. I’ve listed only a few, but I’m sure there are many out there that I haven’t even discovered yet. So far, every single one of these sites for graphic designers that I’ve found offers free deals.
Creative Market has 6 new free items every week. Some weeks I want them all. Others, I want none. But I’ve signed up for their mailing list to make sure I remember to see what goodies they have every week.
And y’all … sometimes they even give away free WordPress themes once in a while. Sign up for their newsletter. And if you love my snark, you’ll love their blog, especially if you’ve delved into trying to up your graphics game and have learned words like kerning and letterpress and open type.
Design Cuts offered a huge bundle at the end of 2015 that I know is going to come in seriously handy. While it wasn’t strictly fonts, much of it would be useful to bloggers who are DIY’ing their way to an awesome blog, just like you! I wonder what their next big freebie will be.
One last tip for my fellow font hoarders … WordMark.it. This is the coolest thing! It lets you type in whatever you want and then gives you previews of the word or phrase using all of the fonts in your library. How awesome is that?
How about you? Do you love fonts or are you just using the standard fonts that come packaged with PicMonkey or whatever photo editing software or app you use? Whatever you do, make sure you have a license if you’ll be profiting from it in any way shape or form. Not only are you helping support another creative, you’ll sleep better at night.
